The Brazilians are thinking more and more seriously about the option of buying second hand F-16s in order to equip the Air Force with a multi-role aircraft for air police mission. Well, their intentions are quite serious.
A delegation of senior Brazilian officials visited, not long ago, the United States. South Americans wanted to see if they can find a squadron or two of F-16s in „airplane graveyard” at Davis-Monthan’s 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG).
They were searching for newer versions of F-16 (not like Romania, for example), Bk40 or higher, but didn’t find them in the Arizona desert.
However , it seems that are chances to get what they want. USAF could lay in the next months several squadrons of F-16, which would be sent for conservation at AAMARG. Brazilians expect dismissal decision to be taken, and then will require the purchase of 12 to 24 aircraft of this type from US.
The advantages would be enormous. First, they’ll have jets ready for combat, requiring minimal maintenance and repair, as opposed to those that were lying for years in the desert. Then, they will have a very good standard of development, Bk40. We must not forget that the newer F-16s have a much improved structural strength and very good prospects for the future.
Brazil is in a desperate situation. Indefinitely postponing a decision in the multirole acquisition program has made them to rely on just a squadron of Mirage jets for air police missions! Moreover, these planes, also bought at second hand from France, would be withdrawn at the end of this year.
